One thing is for sure about this concept phone,¦they could’ve named it shorter. Designed by Pei-Hua Hang, the phone’s name comes from the fact that this concept no longer uses an LCD as viewfinder for the digital camera, instead it uses a transparent frame. And of course, the mobile interaction is made through a touchscreen

Half of world’s population has a mobile

Filed Under (Cell Phone, cellphone, mobile) by ozman on 26-05-2008

Tagged Under : ,

THE number of mobile phone users world soared to over 3.3 billion by the end of 2007, equivalent to a penetration rate of 49 percent, the International Telecommunications Union has said in a report.

Africa showed the strongest gains over the past two years and more than two thirds of all mobile subscribers were from developing countries by the end of 2007, the ITU said.

This is ‘a positive trend that suggests that developing countries are catching up,” the report said.

Mobile subscription growth stood at 39 percent annually in Africa between 2005-2007, and 28 percent in Asia over the same period.

India and China added 154 million and 143 million new subscribers respectively.

The global annual average growth rate stood at 22 percent, the ITU said.

Mobile phones are eclipsing traditional fixed lines and in Africa they account for nearly 90 percent of all telephone subscribers, the report said.

“The continued growth in the mobile sector is matched by no-growth in the fixed-line sector. Fixed telephone penetration has been stagnating at just under 20 percent globally for the last years and growth has been below one percent between 2005 and 2007,” it said.

While developing countries have made great strides in mobile growth, a significant ‘digital divide’ remains for Internet use and particularly the availability of broadband connections, it noted.

High-income countries account for 66 percent of all fixed broadband subscribers although they only represent 16 percent of the world’s population, while developing countries have just one percent of fixed broadband users but 38 percent of the global population.

7,400 new cell phone accounts in 10 days

Filed Under (cellphone, mobile) by ozman on 28-04-2008

Tagged Under : ,

According Cuba’s telephone monopoly 7,400 new cell phone accounts have been contracted in last 10 days as all Cubans were allowed to sign up for service.

Previously, cellular phones were offered only to foreigners or Cubans in top government positions or jobs with foreigners. But many other Cubans already had cell phones through contracts foreigners opened for them.

ETECSA phone company official Maximo Lafuente Vazquez says about 300,000 cellular lines already existed on the island before April 14, when President Raul Castro’s new government lifted the restriction on service. Lafuente’s comments appeared Thursday in the Communist Youth newspaper.

A cell phone contract costs about $120 to activate — half a year’s wages on the average state salary.

Yahoo mobile market shipments (more than the next three suppliers combined)

Nokia  mobile phone market shipment statistics are quite amusing. the total sale of is more than the next three suppliers combined.

Ramon T. Llamas, IDC senior research analyst, said the total market grew 14.3%, but he cautioned that sales could slip as the year progresses because the economy may continue to suffer.

“The mobile phone market will be under increased pressure from a number of factors that compete for users’ attention and wallets,” Llamas said in a statement. “Disposable income is being eroded by rising food and fuel prices, and worries about global financial markets and slow economic growth are creating a cautious outlook for the months ahead.”

The saving grace, he added, is the “tremendous growth potential” in emerging markets. Llamas, who released the report Thursday, expects the low-cost segment to remain strong through the year.

Mobile phone suppliers shipped a total of 291.5 million units during the first quarter. That number was a 14.3% jump over the previous year’s quarter, although, as expected, it was down from the last quarter of 2007, generally a holiday period, when 330.8 million handsets were shipped.

Samsung was in second place with a 15.9% market share in the first quarter. Samsung shipped 46.3 million units, while Motorola shipped 27.4 million units for a 9.4% share of the market. Both companies have problems in the senior management ranks as Samsung’s chief executive resigned this week under pressure and Motorola is searching for someone to take over the helm of its Mobile Devices unit.

Cellphone market Q1 growth fastest since 2006

Filed Under (Cell Phone, cellphone, mobile) by ozman on 25-04-2008

Tagged Under : ,

Cellphone manufacturers have sold 14% more phones in January-March if compared to year back, which means its teh fastest growth. In 2006, market growth was at over 20% level throughout the year.“Global handset volume continues to increase at a healthy pace. Recent annual growth rates have actually gone up, not down. Emerging markets continue to surge,” said Neil Mawston, analyst at Strategy Analytics.

The world’s largest phone maker Nokia, and Korean vendors Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, won further share of the market, helped by attractive designs and wide offerings.

“The world’s two largest vendors, Nokia and Samsung grew twice as fast as the market,” research firms IDC and Strategy Analytics said.

Struggling Motorola, Swedish-Japanese Sony Ericsson and Apple, a newcomer to the industry, could not keep up with continuing fast growth on the market.

Sony Ericsson saw its profits halved in the quarter and its fourth spot in the market lost to LG, as demand slowed for its more expensive camera and music handsets.

“We see that the demand on the high end has softened,” Sony Ericsson sales chief Anders Runevad told a conference call, adding that consumers were becoming more cautious.

However, the 14% growth shows the market has been relatively little hurt by worries over global economy, so far.

“Disposable income is being eroded by rising food and fuel prices and worries about global financial markets and slow economic growth are creating a cautious outlook for the months ahead,” IDC analyst Ramon T. Llamas, said in a statement.
