A year ago, launched by Western Digital a small, smart boxThat could be connected to flat screen and play all kinds of video files.  It was immediately a hit, and already one year from Western Digital is ready with a successor who has been a few improvements that make the player even better – and even more versatile.  The new model is called WD TV Live HD Media Player, and one might therefore think that it is able to display television directly. But it can not.

The box works only with video files you’ve already downloaded, or with video clips from YouTube. That we return to shortly.

Works only as a player
The box is small, light and not noisy. It looks like a mini version of Western Digital external hard drives, which goes under the name MyBook. But WD TV Live HD is not equipped with any Hard Drive And it acts only as a player.

It could quickly generate a lot of moo-cry, but it is actually one of the cool features, which Western Digital has made. For without hard drive is the price kept down, and the player is sold at time of writing the about 900 dollars.

You can feed it with content in several ways. The simplest is to download the video – for example some of here the free HD files – And throw them on a USB key, which is then translated in WD HD TV Live.

Box connected with a flat screen in the living room via the HDMI cable and – voila – you have crispy and delicious HD in the living room.

You can also connect an external hard drive to the WD HD TV Live, and if you really want the full benefit of the player, you can get it to play along with your network and drag files from your PC or a network drive (NAS).

Small hard drives while traveling

During travelling we may get in to storage trouble .Rather than throwing the files on a large external hard drive and take it under his arm, there are smarter solutions. And it is here Verbatim Pocket Drive comes into the picture. Hard disk measuring just 9 times 6.4 centimeters and is 1.4 centimeters thick. Therefore it can easily be thrown in your pocket, without you going to see dark out. The weight is 85 grams, so it is not because the Pocket Drive is cumbersome to have to go.

Verbatim Pocket Drive has a capacity of 250 gigabytes of data, and it gets its power through the USB cable that you connect to your computer. Releasing hence the external power supply and clumsy.

We downloaded two different files for both devices to spot a difference. For this purpose, we used a video file of 700 megabytes and a ZIP file with documents and photos at 800 megabytes. It took 42 seconds to transfer video file to Verbatim Pocket Drive, while the stopwatch showed 40 seconds when we did the same test with the external hard drive from Western Digital. On the other hand was Verbatim hard drive faster than our own MyBook, because you had to download the ZIP file. It took 48 seconds for Verbatim, as we reached 52 seconds with our own Western Digital external hard drive.

So there was no dramatic difference whether we used the small and compact hard drive from Verbatim or large MyBook hard drive with external power. It speaks clearly for Pocket Drives advantage. .
